Blog/Website/Book/Interview FTC Disclosure

Beginning December 1, 2009, the FTC requires bloggers to disclose whenever there could be hidden interests or unspoken biases related to recommendations.  I plan to blog on this site, but I also think being honest with disclosures about the book is a good idea too.

First, the obvious: I am a photographer, affiliate marketer, web designer, understander of techy things, author, and traveler. I like to make money in a lot of different ways, and this book and website represent a few of those.

Second, the less obvious: All the amazon links in the book are affiliate links. You pay the same price, but I get like 8 cents of amazon’s cut. I think that’s pretty cool, and hopefully you do too. That’s about the only specific disclosure that comes to mind. NONE THE LESS:

Per the FTC rules, if I interview someone and they grab the bill for lunch, I would need to disclose this. Ditto if I use an Amazon link that gets me 8 cents instead of an Amazon link that gets me 0 cents. If someone gives me a comfy t-shirt with a logo and I wear it in a photo, same deal. Disclaimers all over the place. This would be tedious for me and even more tedious for readers. But rules are rules. To cover my ass and preserve your reading experience, please assume that, for every link in the book or on this website, every product I mention or use, and any story told, the following all hold true:

Acknowledgements & Thanks

This book simply wouldn’t exist without the quick writing skills and amazing generosity of dozens of friends I interviewed. For the most part, they turned their experiences into well-thought-out summaries and advice with little or no notice.

I can’t thank you all enough!

Thanks to my impromptu book editors and feedback givers, especially the 30 students who gave me over 40,000 words of feedback on the first edition of my first book!

The cover wouldn’t look nearly as nifty as it does without the incredible design talents of Alex Lang. I also had the pleasure of calling him my roommate during our time in Hong Kong. What a cool opportunity it has been to get to work together on various projects after traveling together.

Immense thanks to Annesley Williams who put up with my writing and editing during our travels in the summer of 2014 as this book was first being written. You were incredibly encouraging and supportive. You provided awesome advice and a whole lot of emotional support over the course of the writing process. Thanks for teaching me to work and travel. Your iPhone photography skills continue to flabbergast me. Stick to illustration. You’re making me look bad. 😉

I can’t even begin to thank my parents as much as they deserve. My dad, Stephen M. Moraco, served as an incredible source of inspiration as the first author in our family! Dad, you were a phenomenal sounding board for the ideas that I didn’t know how to put into words. Thanks for being frank when I didn’t say things well. Your advice about time management finally sank in, and I hope I’ve done a thorough job of representing that wisdom here!

Dr. Donna Moraco gets the biggest thank you. Frankly, this book wouldn’t exist without her. I mean that in several ways. Her life’s mission to addict me to travel clearly worked. In addition to driving me all over the lower 48 as a child in a very trusty Jeep, she has been unendingly supportive of my goals as they have gradually gotten more and more outlandish. Her support has given me the confidence to continuously grow and learn. She’s the best teacher I’ll ever meet. She’s actually the coolest mom ever, too. You think I’m just exaggerating and being kind because this is the thank you section, but I’m not. Ask any of my friends. They all love her.

She was also the main editor and the driving force behind applying this book to a curriculum for use as a primary textbook in a college classroom!

Mom, thank you so much for your generous, careful, and repeated editing of the entire text. Thanks, too, for guiding me toward what I really wanted to say, corralling my raucous title capitalization habits, and helping me make this book something far better than either of us expected.

And of course, thank you for the conversation over tea that morning in April that sparked the idea for this entire project.

What an adventure!
